India’s classical civilizations generated immense wealth, and from the 1st to the 17th century AD, the country is estimated to have been the world’s largest economy, accounting for roughly one-third to one-fourth of global wealth. This paper explores the historical evolution and future projections of global income distribution, with particular focus on India’s share.
Historically, India and China were central to the global economy, together contributing nearly 50% of the world’s income until the 17th century. However, their dominance declined due to colonialism, the Industrial Revolution in England, and advancements in warfare such as the use of gunpowder. Their recent resurgence signals a return toward their historical economic significance. In recent decades, global economic power has shifted from G7 nations to emerging markets, highlighting a dynamic redistribution of influence. This transformation reflects the growing importance of countries like India in shaping future economic trends.
The paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of India’s economic journey, from ancient prosperity to its modern growth story. Despite global disruptions such as COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war, India has demonstrated strong long-term growth. Its rise to the world’s fifth-largest economy in 2022 marks a significant milestone, with expectations of becoming the third largest by 2029.
