Education plays a very important role in formation of a civilized society. It can be easily said that education helps a society to function and flourish. There is a major shift in the process of imparting education from traditional to modern method. Where traditional system boasts of imparting education through traditional means like books, black-boards, modern methods utilizes the various technological aspects such as computer, television, radio, internet and so on. One cannot negate the importance of traditional method and also cannot say that the viability of information technology in education is zero. When comparison are drawn between the traditional and modern method, It would be worthwhile mentioning the newest entrant of 20th century i.e. “Post modernization “has effectively carved itself a niche, wherein the focus is given on individual needs rather than generalization of concepts, needs, requirements etc. Having said that it is also necessary to stress on the fact that the benefits of these education modus operandi and information technology should reach to all the sections of society, Be it metropolitan cities or the rural areas. A society or a country as whole cannot achieve excellence in all the aspects of development if one part of its society is lagging behind. This paper aims to understand the role of information technology in education and its impact on rural areas in comparison to urban areas.
