A Frame-Work of Sustainable Agricultural Development in the Context of Globalisation

Agriculture plays a vital role in our national economy and India continues to be an agriculture intensive country with an approximate population of 130 million cultivators. Indian agricultural sector provides food for over one billion Indians and rural livelihood to 75 % of them. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) gets 19.66 % of its share in 2005-06 from the agriculture and allied sectors. Agricultural development is required to be based on the principles of equity, sustainability and environment accountability. For achieving equity among the rural people in the country, elimination of poverty is essential. Together with the implementation of poverty alleviation programmes , adequate budgetary provisions and also with all the sincerity, the development of agriculture in the country is also essential for eliminating or reducing the poverty.
